South Sudan: Kiir replaces undersecretary of East African Affairs Ministry

President Salva Kiir on Wednesday replaced the Undersecretary in the Ministry of East African Affairs in a presidential decree aired on state-run media.

President Kiir replaced Adrea Aguer Ariik Malueth with Beny Gideon Mabor. He had served as a Deputy Chairperson of the South Sudan Human Rights Commission prior to his appointment.

Mabor is a trained lawyer and worked as a full-time employee and consultant for several NGOs, including South Sudan Law Society, Justice Africa, and Management Systems International, amongst others.

During the IGAD-led peace process for South Sudan in 2014-2015, Mr Mabor was a civil society representative at the peace talk.

“I, Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan, do hereby issue for the appointment of Beny Gideon Mabor as the Undersecretary in the Ministry of East African Affairs [effective] August 9, 2023,” reads the decree issued at 8 pm local time.

President Kiir did not explain his move to fire Adrea, who was also appointed by the East African Community (EAC) on May 31, 2023 as the region’s Deputy Secretary General for Infrastructure, Productive, Social and Political Sectors.
