UEDCL begins major upgrade of electricity distribution infrastructure in Masaka

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has commenced a major upgrade of electricity distribution infrastructure in Masaka City and its surrounding areas.

The project, which kicked off in late March 2026, aims to improve power supply reliability, reduce technical losses, and meet the growing electricity demand in the region.

According to UEDCL officials, the upgrade involves the installation of new transformers, replacement of old and dilapidated poles and conductors, and the extension of the distribution network to previously underserved areas.

The works will also include the construction of new substations to boost capacity.

UEDCL Managing Director Stephen Muleke said the upgrade is part of the company’s broader strategy to modernize electricity distribution infrastructure across its areas of operation.

He noted that Masaka has experienced increased power demand due to population growth, urbanization, and the expansion of commercial and industrial activities.

“These upgrades will significantly reduce outages, improve voltage stability, and enhance the quality of power supply to our customers in Masaka,” Muleke stated.

The project is expected to benefit thousands of households, businesses, and institutions in Masaka City and nearby rural areas.

Residents and business owners have welcomed the development, hoping it will address the frequent power interruptions that have affected the area for years.

UEDCL has assured customers that necessary safety measures will be observed during the construction works and urged the public to cooperate with the teams on the ground.

The Masaka infrastructure upgrade is part of a larger nationwide effort by UEDCL to rehabilitate and expand electricity distribution networks in various districts under its concession areas.
